Two men arrested for drugs in suspected drug area in Pittsburgh

| May 5, 2020 | Drug Charges, Federal Drug Charges |

Regardless of the area in Pittsburgh or throughout Western Pennsylvania, people can find themselves subjected to drug investigations. Some locations, however, are better-known for drug activity. Law enforcement will frequently focus much of its resources in those locations. This can lead to a reduction in drug activity, but it also might be the catalyst for arrests in which people were uninvolved in illegal behavior or got caught up in a difficult situation. No matter the circumstances, a legal defense is imperative to counteract drug charges.

A specific area in Pittsburgh known as “the hole” is a perceived drug area. It was there that detectives saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed at approximately 7:20 p.m. They initiated a pursuit to stop the car. Officers claim to have smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle. They also say two of the three people in the vehicle, males 28 and 29, started moving their hands in their pants. The officers suspected the men were trying to hide something.

A person in the front passenger seat appeared to be under the influence. He was not charged. After searching the first two men, marijuana, ecstasy and a package of drugs were found. The last item was in the front of one man’s pants. When searching the other man, officers say they found crack cocaine in the front of his pants. They also discovered $1,840 in cash. The men were arrested. Upon searching the vehicle, officers also found oxycodone and packets with various names stamped on them. One of the men is said to have tried to discard a brick of heroin. They were arrested on numerous drug-related charges.

Drug charges can range in severity depending on the apparent intent and the amount a person is alleged to have in his or her possession. If it is for individual use, the charges and penalties will be different when compared to the drugs being for distribution and trafficking. No matter the foundation of the arrest, a legal defense is critical.

Since the investigation began with officers patrolling a known drug area and there was a traffic stop, there may be strategies to call the evidence into question. Perhaps the stop was in violation of police protocol or presumptions were made that renders the search inadmissible. There could be a chance at a plea bargain. A legal professional experienced in providing a defense for drug charges can analyze the case and help in preparing a defense.
