Do you know the major types of credit card fraud?

Although credit card fraud remains a major problem throughout the United States, many people don't understand the finer details of this crime. Unfortunately, a lack of knowledge often leads to a situation in which a person makes a poor decision that gets him or her into trouble with the law.

Here is a short list of some of the most common types of credit card fraud:

-- Account takeover. As the name suggests, this is when a person gives his or her personal information, such as an address, to a person who is looking to commit fraud. From there, the person contacts the bank to receive a new card in the victim's name.

-- Theft. This is one of the simplest types of credit card fraud. This occurs when a person steals a credit card before it reaches its intended destination.

-- Fraudulent application. When a person uses another person's name and personal information to apply for a credit card.

Every type of credit card fraud is a serious crime that is typically accompanied by a serious punishment, if convicted. This is why it's so important to understand your legal rights and why you are being accused of such a serious crime.

If you find yourself charged with credit card fraud, focus on why this is the case, what you did to put yourself in this position and which defense strategy may work best for you in the future. When you do this, you may find it possible to put this situation in the past without it having too much of an impact on your life.
