An unusual case is making its way through the federal court system in Pennsylvania. A young man is being accused of identity theft after authorities allege that he has been posing as a teenager for several years. They assert that the man, who claims to be a teenager, is actually 23 years old.
The man has been living with a Pennsylvania couple since 2012, when they met him at the apartment complex where they live. He allegedly told them that he was an international exchange student, and they believed him to be only 14 years old at that time. He began living with them and was enrolled in a local high school. Until his recent arrest, he was known as an exemplary student and was active in several school organizations.
The couple who took the young man in reported him to authorities after they claim that he began making unusual threats and acting strangely. He is said to have made statements about school shootings and suggested that there were kids at school that he intended to harm. At that point, the couple contacted the FBI. The investigation led to the authorities determining that the teen was actually a foreign national in his 20s.
As this case continues, additional information may be released to the public. In addition to federal identity theft charges, the young man is also accused of several other crimes, including conspiracy, tampering with records and having a sexual relationship with a minor. The case has certainly captured the attention of the Pennsylvania media, and many are curious about the set of circumstances that led the man to pass as a high school student.
