Four face federal drug charges in Pennsylvania

An investigation headed by the Pittsburgh office of the FBI has resulted in the arrest of four individuals in western Pennsylvania. Should the case move forward, the four individuals will face charges for violating multiple federal drug laws, and each will have an opportunity to present a criminal defense in a court of law. The FBI claims that the federal drug charges will play a significant role in disrupting the flow of illegal drugs through the state.

The investigation was the result of a collaborative effort between the FBI and law enforcement agents at both the state and local levels. The case involved the largest single seizure of heroin that Western Pennsylvania has ever experienced. More than 300 bricks of the drug were discovered in a vehicle driven by one of the arrested individuals.

Investigators intercepted multiple phone calls between the defendants. Physical surveillance was also employed. When investigators learned that a sizable drug transport was expected, the vehicle in question was stopped and searched, which yielded the hidden drugs described above.

A grand jury will now determine if there is probable cause to indict the four individuals currently held in the matter. The federal drug charges they face include conspiracy to possess and distribute both cocaine and heroin. While the desire to slow drug trafficking in the state of Pennsylvania is admirable, the fact remains that investigations that involve multiple agencies often include errors and omissions, many of which can be called into play as part of a criminal defense strategy.
