An Allegheny County woman was arrested on March 11 and taken to jail on suspicion of weapons charges in connection with a shooting at a local bar. While the woman was not involved in the shooting, which ended in one person dead and another in critical condition, but her son was the alleged shooter. Authorities say that the woman was a straw buyer of some of the guns her son allegedly used in the shooting.
Police say that the woman’s son was at a bar in North Fayette early on March 11 when he became agitated. He was reportedly having an argument with his girlfriend via text message. The suspect left the bar and returned with three guns, police claim, warning two people inside to leave before opening fire.
Two people were shot in the head, one fatally, before a man tackled the shooter and another man held him down until police arrived.
The mother of the suspect in that shooting was arrested later that same day. Authorities claim that the suspect was not allowed to own firearms and that two of the guns used in the shooting were registered in the mother’s name. She is expected to be charged with several weapons crimes, including:
· Violations of the uniform firearms act;
· Lending or giving a firearm to someone not allowed to have a gun; and
· Conspiracy to commit firearms violation
When there is a violent crime, prosecutors will often seek charges against whomever the gun involved is registered to, even if that person was not involved in the incident. In those cases, it is very important to have a criminal defense attorney representing your legal rights.
