Incident on I-81 leads to weapons charges against Pennsylvania man

Police in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, are accusing a local man of a range of charges, including possession of a stolen gun, after the man was arrested on Feb. 1. Authorities claim the man used the gun to threaten a group of people travelling in a car on Interstate 81 the morning of the arrest.

According to an arrest affidavit filed with the court, a gray Toyota travelling northbound on I-81 in Greene Township neared another vehicle with four people inside. The people inside the second vehicle saw the car's driver point a gun at them and a red dot that may have been from a laser sighting device on the gun. The Toyota briefly followed the four off the interstate before re-entering the highway, the people in the second vehicle said.

Police were alerted and they pulled over a vehicle matching the complainants' description shortly afterward. They arrested the car's driver, a 33-year-old man, and obtained a search warrant for the car. They later claimed to find a .45 caliber handgun, several small bags of cocaine, a bag of marijuana, an electronic scale and nearly $2,000 in cash. The gun had a laser sight attached to it and was reported stolen, officers said in the affidavit.

The suspect, who was being held in jail as of Feb. 7, faces dozens of felony and misdemeanor charges as a result of the police stop. Among the charges is illegal possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, making terroristic threats, and multiple counts of drug possession and possession with intent to distribute. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 7.
