Proposed bill would require AG to share child porn information

A bill sponsored by Pennsylvania State Rep. Dan Deasy seeks to require state and local law enforcement to collaborate on investigations into Internet child pornography in the state. Based on comments by state Attorney General Linda Kelly, the bill may not be necessary, since Kelly's office already performs the duties outlined in the bill.

The proposed legislation, officially named the Pennsylvania Attorney General Mandated Reporter Law, is unofficially named after a Pittsburgh woman who was victimized by a man she met online in 2002. She recently joined a children's advocacy group and Deasy, D-Westwood, at a press conference announcing the bill.

If passed, the bill would require the AG's Office to share any evidence it gathers regarding possible crimes within the state with state and local police within 24 hours. The bill's namesake called on Kelly "to do the right thing and share this information."

In response, Kelly said that her office already passes along information about potential sharing of child pornography over the Internet to law enforcement agencies. In a statement, she said the information is made available to Pennsylvania State Police and all local district attorneys and police departments that participate in the nationwide Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program. She said her office's Child Predator Unit is dedicated to punishing child pornography offenders.

Deasy said that the child sexual assault charges against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky makes passing his bill even more important, although Sandusky has not been charged with possessing child pornography. He added that he hoped to find a co-sponsor soon.
