A 34-year-old man in Pennsylvania faces sex crime charges with some of the heaviest possible sentences in state history. The man is accused of 195 sex crimes involving minors, enough to fill a 14-page court document. Prosecutors allege that the defendant committed crimes against victims ranging from 4 to 17 years of age over a 10-year period.
Yet, interestingly, it wasn't until the first victim came forward and the media got a hold of the story that more and more alleged victims began to come forward. Some were even reluctant to press charges as adults.
In this case, the defendant faces an incredibly long prison sentence. Reports are coming in that he will face more than 1,000 years, which is basically a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Bail has been set at an astounding $5 million.
This case, while it is an extreme one, goes to show the importance of having legal representation when facing accusations of sex crimes. Often, when the media gets a hold of a story, more accusers can come forward. Good representation can help you sort through these accusers and investigate the legitimacy of their claims.
Even in less extreme cases, the penalties for sex crimes can be quite severe. Because the stakes are so high, strong representation is necessary to ensure a fair trial and sentencing if the defendant is found guilty.
Remember, it is the prosecution's job to prove guilt, not the other way around. With an experienced criminal defense lawyer on your team, the accusation of a sex crime does not have to mean a lengthy prison sentence.
