10 arrested on allegations of being child predators

There are often internet stings performed by police to identify those who prey on children. The problem is that these cases sometimes result in entrapment, where an officer eggs on a person to a point where he or she interacts when he or she otherwise may not have. In that case, the person being accused of soliciting a minor may be able to have the case against him or her dropped due to having the evidence thrown out.

That's not always the best defense, but there are many open to you if you are arrested like these people have been. Ten people accused of using the internet to attempt to sexually exploit children have been arrested in western Pennsylvania. The arrests, part of Operation e-Traffic, took place after the investigation identified several leads about online predators in the area. The Attorney General's Child Predator Section and the City of McKeesport police participated in the operation.

The investigators reported that they worked undercover, and they were able to identify a number of people who had tried to arrange sexual encounters with them. All the defendants were located in Erie, Allegheny and Beaver counties. The investigators assumed the identities of children to perform the operation, working on a number of websites to identify anyone who would solicit them.

One of the people accused, a 70-year-old man, is alleged to have responded to an online advertisement to seek out a sexual encounter with a 36-year-old mother's 10-year-old daughter. The undercover agents posing as the mother and child set up a meeting with the man. He was arrested on arrival.

A 22-year-old man was also charged during this operation. He allegedly made contact with an agent posing as a 14-year-old boy and sent sexually explicit messages. They arranged to meet, and he was arrested when he arrived.
