Examples of internet crimes and how different they can be

Internet crimes are incredibly diverse, which makes it especially important for those who are accused of such crimes to know exactly what legal options they have. To understand exactly how much ground these crimes can cover, consider the following examples of online crime:

1. Identity Theft

Identity theft is often carried out for financial reasons. For instance, information may be stolen to hack into a bank account, or personal information may be gathered and used to open fraudulent credit card accounts.

2. Piracy

Online piracy simply refers to the theft of digital works, whether they are e-books, movies, songs, or something else entirely. In the early 2000s, this term often applied to music, but it's used frequently these days in relation to movies and TV shows.

3. Drug Crimes

Drugs can't actually change hands online, of course, but many face-to-face transactions begin online. Those who are looking to buy may search out dealers on the Internet and then arrange a meeting. In some cases, prescription drugs are sold online as a way to get around the need for the prescriptions themselves.

4. Child Pornography

The Internet is often used to trade in child pornography and other explicit material. Those who are selling and buying choose to do this online because they can remain anonymous.

As you can see, these are four very different crimes, and this is by no means an exhaustive list of the types of Internet crimes that are committed. If you've been accused of doing anything illegal on your computer, be sure you know what defense tactics are best for your specific case.
