Pennsylvania business owner indicted for alleged tax evasion

The majority owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins' main practice rink has been indicted for tax fraud. On July 29, the 59-year-old owner of Iceoplex at Southpointe was indicted by a federal grand jury on 10 counts of failure to pay and one count of obstruction of the Internal Revenue Code. The alleged tax evasion reportedly adds up to $1 million in unpaid taxes.

According to the indictment, federal income taxes and Social Security and Medicare contributions that were deducted from employees' paychecks were never actually paid to the government. The accused man allegedly instructed his staff members not to make the payments. The alleged payroll tax evasion took place between 2008 and 2011. A defense attorney for the business owner told a news reporter that the accused man denies the tax evasion charges.

Iceoplex is a 65,000-square-foot facility that hosts recreational hockey programs as well as the National Hockey League team practices. The accused man has served as the president of Iceoplex since 2003 and was also connected to a Penguins ownership group that filed for bankruptcy in 1998. The Penguins team is expected to move to a new practice rink in 2015.

A business owner who is being indicted for tax fraud may wish to consult a criminal defense attorney right when they become aware that they are being investigated. While a federal investigation is going on, an attorney may be able to conduct a parallel investigation in order to prepare for possible future charges. In some cases, an accused person may have been unaware that tax fraud was going on in their payroll department. An attorney might be able to gather evidence that the business owner made corrections as soon as the tax issue was brought to their attention.
