Police arrest suspected White House shooter in western Pennsylvania

A man arrested at a hotel in Indiana County, Pennsylvania is suspected of firing a gun at the White House, state police said on Nov. 16. The arrest came five days after Secret Service agents discovered two bullets that struck the White House, including one that hit a window. The suspect may face federal charges of attempting to assassinate President Obama, though no one was hurt in the incident.

Around the same time the bullets were discovered, the U.S. Park Police received reports of gunshots fired between the Ellipse and the Washington Monument the evening of Nov. 11. A Secret Service investigation into those reports led to a car parked in the area that was allegedly connected to the arrested man, though the Secret Service would not describe the connection. Whether the gunshots and the bullets that struck the White House was still being investigated as of Nov. 16.

The federal park police obtained an arrest warrant against the man, 21. They had reason to believe he would be at a Hampton Inn in White Township to visit a friend. Pennsylvania State Police went to the hotel and showed employees a photo of the suspect. Around noon on Nov. 16, an employee saw the man in the lobby and called police, who arrested him without incident around 12:20 p.m. He was later transferred to Secret Service custody.

No one was injured by the bullets that hit the White House. One bullet was found in the building's exterior. The other broke through the "historic exterior glass" of one of the windows, but was stopped by a pane of ballistic glass hanging behind that glass, according to a Secret Service press release.
