Man allegedly spotted with handgun arrested on weapons charge

A random encounter between a police officer and a 27-year-old man on the streets of York, Pennsylvania led to the man getting arrested on charges of illegal possession of a firearm. The man is accused of possession of a stolen gun and of possessing a gun despite having a felony charge on his record.

According to an article in the York Daily Record, there were numerous police officers in the neighborhood where the suspect was spotted on July 23 due to a fight that happened earlier that day. One of the officers who were patrolling the area reportedly saw the man walking across the street. The man allegedly carried a gun in his hand. The officer called out to the man and ordered him to drop the gun, but the man fled, the officer claimed.

The officer chased the suspect and allegedly saw him toss the gun into a breezeway. A short time later, he ran up to a vehicle, got in, and drove away.

The officer recovered the gun and investigators said it was stolen. Somehow, York police discovered the suspect's name and found he pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge in 2004, which would make possession of a gun illegal in Pennsylvania. Officers later tracked down the 27-year-old and arrested him. Court documents related to the arrest did not provide detail about how the arrest was made.

The man was charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and receiving stolen property. Bail was assigned at $15,000. As of Nov. 6, the man was still in custody at the York County Prison.
