Man admits possessing child pornography, denies distributing it

A 33-year-old North Wales, Pennsylvania man recently pleaded guilty in Montgomery County to charges of possession of child pornography. Authorities said that the man used a laptop at his home to visit a file sharing website that contained computer files depicting child pornography. The man will be evaluated to determine whether he should be declared a sexually violent predator, then sentenced to prison.

The Pennsylvania State Police Computer Crime Unit began investigating the man back in March 2010 when it was looking into who was visiting the file sharing website. It traced one Internet address to the man's residence, which eventually led to state police obtaining a warrant to search the man's home on June 2, 2010.

The police also arrested and interrogated the man, who admitted that there was child pornography on a laptop seized at the home and that he was the only person with access to the computer. Officers accused him of also distributing child pornography on the site but the man denied knowingly doing so, according to the arrest affidavit.

If the Pennsylvania Sexual Offender Assessment Board determines that the man is a sexual predator, under Pennsylvania's version of Megan's Law, he will be placed under several lifetime restrictions after his prison sentence is over. For example, he will have to register his address with the police and local community. He will also have to submit to counseling.

Prior to that possible outcome, the man may be sent to prison by the Montgomery County Court. He faces up to 14 years of incarceration.
