Child Porn Leads to Federal Prison for Former Pennsylvania Man

A Pennsylvania man was sentenced to six years in federal prison after he pled guilty to charges related to the distribution of child pornography. The man was also accused of attempting to destroy evidence related to the child pornography when he reportedly destroyed an external hard drive containing illegal images.

The man was accused of sending pornographic images of children under the age of 18 to internet users and discussing inappropriate topics, such as grooming children, with people in chat rooms in 2009 when the man lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

The federal charges against the man were three counts of transportation of child pornography and one count of destroying evidence with intent to obstruct a federal investigation. The man was initially indicted in a Pennsylvania federal court in April 2010. He pled guilty and was then sentenced for the internet crimes in January.

The case was investigated by the federal Justice Department in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Internet crimes, particularly child pornography crimes, often result in federal charges because of the Web's national, even international, scope. The penalties for a federal crime are often more severe than charges brought in a state court. In addition to the reputation damage tied to child pornography charges, a person facing federal charges in conjunction with an internet crime is most likely looking at significant prison time.

That's why it is especially important to consult with an experienced internet crime lawyer if you are accused of a crime related to child pornography. A criminal defense attorney will be able to aggressively advocate for your rights and ensure that you receive fair representation in the criminal proceeding.
